Quilted Fabric Bin Instructions: A washable fabric bin for school supplies featuring a Desert Bird illustrated panel and coordinate.
Materials: 1 9”x9” panel. 1/2 yard featured fabric. 1/2 yard of lining fabric. 2 17” x 20” pieces of batting (fusible batting if you prefer), optional 20” of 1/2”-1” wide ribbon or twill table for handles (or, make your own handles from scraps).
Overview: You will need 4 fabric panels measuring 17” x 20” with a 3.5” x 3.5” notch cut out of each bottom corner 2 make the box bottom. 2 of the 17” x 20” panels are a simple liner. The other two are the outside front and back. We are going to feature one Desert Bird 9” x 9” illustration on the front panel.
Step 1: Cut two 17” x 20” panels of both the lining fabric and the batting. Cut one 17” x 20” of the featured fabric for the back. Cut pieces for the front: 2 pieces at 9” x 5” and 2 pieces at 6” x 17”.
Step 2: Center the interfacing over the wrong side of the front and back panels. Quilt as you like then trim these pieces to 17” x 20”. You now have 4 pieces at 17” x 20”: 2 lining pieces, a bin front and a bin back.
Step 3: Cut a 3.5” x 3.5” notch at both bottom corners of each 17” x 20” piece. Using a 1/2” seam allowance, sew the bottom edge of both lining pieces, wrong sides together. Repeat for the bin front and back. Press the bottom seams. Press all the top edges in 1/2”.
Step 4: Unfold the top edges that you just pressed then sew the sides of the lining assembly, wrong sides together using a 1/2” seam allowance. Repeat for the front/back assembly.
Step 5: Working on one side of the lining assembly, pinch the side and bottom open so you can line up the side seam with the bottom seam. Sew across this new edge to create the box corner. Repeat on the other side then repeat for the front/back assembly.
Step 6: Turn the front/back assembly right side out. Leave the lining assembly right side in and place it inside the front/back assembly. Line up the side seams, tucking in the pressed top edge fold from step 3. Clip or pin. Work around the back matching the folded lining top edge with the folded outer bin top edge, clipping or pinning. If you are adding handles to your project, cut 2 pieces at 10” long. Tuck the raw edges on either side of the side seams. Once you have everything lined up, topstitch along the top edge to close the top seam. You can leave the bin as-is or fold over the top edge a bit to let the lining show.
