Get your student organized in style with these beginner level projects that feature Desert Bird illustrated fabric panels and coordinates: a quilted 3-ring binder cover, simple zip bag and a fabric storage bin.
Quilted Binder Cover Instructions: A removable quilted 3-ring binder cover featuring a Desert Bird illustrated panel and coordinate.
Materials: 1 9”x9” panel. 1/2 yard featured (cover) fabric. 1/2 yard of liner fabric. 1 piece of batting the same size as the fully open notebook (see step 1). Note: you can get away with smaller pieces of fabric if you are willing to do more piecing (see step 2).
Step 1: Open your binder fully and measure width and height. In this example, a 1.5” binder measured 22”x12.5”. We are going to cut 1 pieces of batting to this dimension.
Step 2: Add 1.25” to both dimension. In our example, we started with 22”x12.5”, after adding 1.25”, our panel dimension is 23.25” x 13.75”. We are going to make a quilted panel at this dimension.
In the example in the picture, I placed a 2”x9” strip to the right of the Dino panel and a 13”x9” strip to the left. Then I added a 23.25 x 2” strip above the assembly and one below. I ironed a 22”x12.5” piece of fusible batting to the back of the assembly, centering it so the panel assembly hangs evenly over the batting (slightly more than 1/2” all the way around). I quilted minimally – along seams and around the dinosaur.
Feel free to use your creativity here! For example, you could use the quilt-as-you-go and/or scrap bust around the illustrated panel. You could quilt as fancy or as little as you like. The key is to create a cover panel of the dimensions calculated in Step 2.
Step 3: Cut a lining piece the same size as the top panel (23.25” x 13.75” in my example). Cut 2 pocket pieces at the same height, 14”wide. Fold both pocket pieces in half so that they are the height of the cover panel x 7” wide. Now, stack the assembly:
a. Place the lining face up
b. Place a pocket on each side of the lining, matching the raw edges to the side of the lining. (I.e., folds are towards the middle.)
c. Place the top panel face down.
Step 4: stitch (scant 1/2” seam allowance) along both long sides and one short side. Leave one short side open. Turn the assembly right side out and press.
Step 5: On the open edge, flip the pocket back over to the front side. Stitch the seam closed and trim the seam then flip the pocket back to the lining side.
Step 6: To insert the notebook into the cover, hold the cover up like a tent with pockets facing up. Then, open the binder fully and pull up from the center (tenting the cover backwards). This removes the tension so that you can slip each side into the pocket then shimmy it into place.
